How Do You Know If a Hernia Is Serious?

A hernia can start small, but it may become dangerous if ignored.

Watch out for these warning signs:

• Severe or increasing pain• Hard, swollen, or tender bulge• Bulge that won’t go back in• Nausea or vomiting• Red or darkened skin around the area• Fever

Emergency warning:If the hernia becomes very painful, stuck, or you feel sick, seek medical help immediately. It may be a strangulated hernia, which needs urgent treatment.
